As recipients of millions of new smartphones and tablets, our pockets and purses in 2011 bulged with media, if not money. As a result, the mediasphere grew ever denser and noisier this year -- a din that only increased as people strove to break through it with deeds that were outrageous, audacious or just plain dumb.

Fox 4 weather forecaster Don Harman took his own life Tuesday, casting a pall Wednesday over Kansas City's top-rated morning newscast. The 41-year-old native of Marietta, Ohio, was found by his wife, Monica Johns, at their south Kansas City home shortly before 5 p.m. Police said the death was a suicide.

People like to say that MTV isn't MTV anymore, but Joe Comparato argues that the original idea behind MTV wasn't sustainable. Comparato's Lawrence-based company, TheCoolTV, takes a different approach. It is a chain of 71 local TV stations, and growing, that draws on a common core of content. Basically, it's music radio with pictures.
